The History of Bingo
The bingo history can be traced back to 1530, to an Italian lottery called “Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Itali”, which is still played every Saturday in Italy. By 1778 word of the game had spread to France where they called the game “Le Lotto”.
It was during this period that the popular version of the lottery was born. In the classic version of Lotto, which developed during this period, the playing card used in the game was divided into three horizontal and nine vertical rows. Each horizontal row had five numbered and four blank squares in a random arrangement. The vertical rows contained numbers from 1 to 10 in the first row, 11 to 20 in the second row, et cetera, up to 90. Not two Lotto cards were alike. Chips numbered from 1 to 90 completed the playing equipment.
Players were dealt a single Lotto card, then the caller would draw a small wooden, numbered token from a cloth bag and read the number aloud. The players would cover the number if it appeared on their card.
The first player to cover a horizontal row was the winner. Later versions of Le Lotto appeared in Germany, where instead of being used as a gambling game, they were instead used for educational purposes for example to teach children their times tables. When the game reached North America in 1929, it became known as “beano”.
It was first played at a carnival near Atlanta, Georgia. New York toy salesman Edwin S. Lowe renamed it “bingo” after he overheard someone accidentally yell “bingo” instead of “beano”. Lowe immediately realized the money-making potential for Beano. Upon his return to his home in New York, he created his own Beano game by procuring some beans, cardboard and a rubber number stamp creating the first commercialized version of the game, retailing at $1 for a 12 card set and $2 for a 24 cards. The game was an immediate success. A Catholic priest from Pennsylvania approached Lowe about using bingo as a means of raising church funds. The priest had put the scheme into operation after having bought several sets of Lowe’s $2.00 Bingo game.
However, problems developed immediately when it was found that each game produced half a dozen or more winners. Lowe realized that to make the game workable on this large of a scale, a great many more combinations of numbers would have to be developed for the cards. To accomplish this, Lowe sought the services of a professor of mathematics at Columbia University named Carl Leffler. Lowe requested the professor to devise 6,000 new Bingo cards with non repeating number groups. The professor agreed to a fee that remunerated him on a per card basis. The subsequent quest to find 6000 cards with 6000 different number combinations took many months and reputedly at the expense of the professor’s sanity When bingo started being played in churches it became increasingly popular.
By 1934, an estimated 10,000 bingo games were played weekly, and today more than $90 million dollars are spent on bingo each week in North America alone.
