Werder Bremen vs Sampdoria – Champions League qualification

The last round of the Champions League qualification continues tonight, and German giants Werder Bremen take on Italian Sampdoria in a highly anticipated first match.

The stakes could not be higher, as qualification to the Champions League group stage could be worth to £20 million to each club. Both teams enjoyed a very strong finish to their respective seasons last year, however since then a lot has changed in both camps.

Below you find the full match preview and our prediction for the game tonight between Werder Bremen and Sampdoria.

Werder Bremen

The biggest worry for Werder Bremen is who will replace former star player Mesut Özil after his transfer to Real Madrid for £15 million. Özil surely gave Werder Bremen a spark up front, which will be greatly missed tonight. However one of two new young players could replace him, as both Aaron Hunt and Marko Marin are ready to fill his spot.

More worrying are the problems in defence with Naldo out and not ready for the game. At the moment he is to be replaced by Prodl, who most likely will have to rely heavily on Mertesacker to keep Sampdoria away.

It will be a tough assignment for Werder Bremen though, and the main question is whether Özil’s replacement can provide enough forward to attackers Almeida and Pizarro.

It would be the first time since 1992, if Sampdoria manage to qualify for the Champions League tonight. Last time they participated, they lost in the final to Barcelona after Ronald Koeman’s goal in extra time won the game for Barcelona.

Sampdoria have done well to hold on to their star duo Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini over the summer, but with manager Luigi Del Neri leaving the club and taken over as head coach of Juventus, it still remains open whether they can continue last years great run.

Domenico Di Carlo has since taken over and this will be the new manager’s first competitive game in charge. Tonight he can start off his new carrier with a good result and must anxious to get started. Sampdoria have a full team to select from with the exception of defender Accardi, who is injured and unavailable to the new manager.

Betting Tip

We believe this game will be suited to Sampdoria’s style of play. Werder Bremen will look to attack, since they are at home, and Sampdoria can hit them with quick counter attacks using the electrifying talents of Antonio Cassano and goal scoring prowess of Italian forward Giampaolo Pazzini.

Furthermore we believe the loss of Brazilian defender Naldo will also hurt Werder Bremen, as his absence from the back will give further space to the Italian forwards. Werder Bremen could also struggle to create chances without Mesut Özil.
