Uruguay vs South Korea – betting tips, match preview and prediction

World Cup BettingSaturday at 15:00 BST Uruguay will play South Korea in the first 1/8-final at the World Cup in Port Elizabeth. Uruguay cruised through their qualification group with impressive seven points and is the favorite today against the South Koreans.

Match Preview

The two time former world champions are hoping to find some of their former strength and make it to the quarter-final for the first time since 1970. The Uruguayans are likely desperate to show the world once again, that they are among the top football nations in the world, after a decade of disappointing results at the World Cup. Their performances so far have been impressive and Uruguay coach Tabarez, who is in charges for the second time, must be optimistic before the match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. They found themselves in a tough group containing France, Mexico and South Africa, but qualified on top of the group after displaying great defensive organization in all three matches. Uruguay has not yet conceded any goals and does have abilities upfront as well, where Diego Forlan is maintaining his great run from Atletico Madrid earlier this year.

The South Koreans way to the knockout stage was not nearly as impressive. In the end four points turned out to be enough for the Koreans, after Argentina won all their matches in the group. Overall the South Koreans have shown great fitness and passing game, which was well displayed in their 2-0 victory against Greece. After conceding six goals in the last two games, their defensive abilities have been brought into question and surely it must be bettered before the deciding match against Uruguay. The matches against Argentina and Nigeria really showed their weaknesses in the back, but with four days of preparation they may have resolved some of the issues.

Team Updates

Coach Tabarez is expected to use the same starting line-up that performed against Mexico and won their last group match 1-0. Some speculations concerning defender Diego Godin has been made, as he is only one booking from suspension. He could be replaced by Mauricio Victorino to save him for a possible quarter-final.

The South Koreans could possibly make some changes in the defence after their 2-2 draw in the last group match. It will be crucial for coach Huh Jung-moo to stabilize his defensive line and we expect him to replace Cha Du-ri with Kim Dong-jin.

Uruguay vs South Korea betting tip

Our betting pick for the match is Uruguay to win at odds 1.91 at 888 Sports.

The two sides have played each other one time before at the 1990 World Cup. Back then Uruguay and South Korea met in their final group match and Uruguay were victorious after an over-time winner from Daniel Fonseca. The result could be something similar today, although it does not make much sense to compare the two games. We expect the deciding factor today will be the defensive qualities of the two sides. A match up the Uruguayans will win at this point in the tournament with three clean sheets so far. The South Koreans have a major task of stabilizing their back and only had four days do so. It will be a difficult assignment for the South Koreans and our match prediction is a comfortable 1-0 or 2-0 victory for the Uruguayans.
