Uruguay vs Ghana – betting tips, match preview and prediction

World Cup BettingUruguay will play Ghana in the second quarter-final on Friday at 19:30 BST in Johannesburg at Soccer City stadium and we are expecting a great match when the former two times world champions from Uruguay take on the raising Black Stars from Ghana. It would be Uruguay’s first semi-final since 1970, while Ghana can make World Cup history being the first ever African side to make it to the semi-final.

Match Preview

The former football superpower, Uruguay, have two World Cup trophies already, but they both came in the early days of the tournament’s history in 1930 and 1950. This year they are hoping to grasp some of past glories and once again make it all the way to a World Cup semi-final. Being a country of 3.5 million people, it would be a major accomplishment for Uruguay, but their chances have never been better to come back on top. Uruguay’s performances have been fairly impressive so far, although their opponents have not been among the strongest sides at the World Cup. In their previous four games they have only conceded one goal and have yet to lose.

Ghana on the other hand were the only third African side to make to a quarter-final, but will they also be the first to reach the semi-final. If so, they have to do what Cameroon and Senegal could not manage, when they had their chance in the quarter-final. Their World Cup performance has been somewhat up and down so far, with a win against Serbia, draw against Australia and loss against Germany. However the win against USA in injury-time will likely have given them a confidence boost, which will be useful in the match tonight. Unfortunately they have a lot of players out for the match with injury or suspension, but with an entire African continent supporting then, anything can happen.

Team Updates

Uruguay defender Diego Godin was injured in their last match against South Korea and will be replaced by Mauricio Victorino tonight. Coach Oscar Tabarez already announced his starting line-up Wednesday, which gave room for Alvaro Fernandez in midfield at expense of Alvaro Perreira.

Ghana’s Kevin Prince Boateng and Asamoah Gyan both picked up minor injuries against USA, but are expected to recover for the match tonight. Their defender Jonathan Mensah is suspended and could be replaced by a fit again Isaac Vorsah, while Sulley Muntari could start for the first at the World Cup because of Andre Ayew’s suspension.

Uruguay vs Ghana betting tip

Our betting pick will a draw at odds 3.10 at 888 Sports.

The match at Soccer City stadium will be the first between Uruguay and Ghana, but what a venue for their first ever fixture. We actually expect a close match between the two sides, which will be of major importance for both countries and their players. It could easily turn out to be a very tactical affair, where neither team wants to make a mistake and will play a waiting game. At the same time both sides have good qualities in defence and has not conceded many goals yet, which will likely not happen tonight either. Our match prediction will be low scoring draw at 0-0 or 1-1 and likely a penalty shootout could decide the match.
