Tottenham vs Inter Milan – Champions League – Match Preview and Betting Tips

Tottenham plays Inter Milan in their fourth round match in the Champions League at White Hart Lane in London. The reverse match, 14 days ago, ended 4-3 to Inter Milan, after an early expulsion of the Spurs keeper Gomes and a stunning hat-trick of the left wing Gareth Bale.

Match Preview

Tottenham’s defense was really challenged by Inter’s perk combinations (even before the expulsion) and also has conceded goals in the last 12 matches. Now they have to do without first goalkeeper Gomes, while captain and defensive organizer King is still not clear.

Champions League champions Inter Milan may also miss their first keeper; talented Julio Cesar. In addition Cambiasso is missing from the defensive midfield, which reduces the possibility that the team can shut down for Tottenham’s dynamic offensive (9 goals in the first 3 Champions League matches). Including the crafty and dangerous van der Vaart, who is back from quarantine in the first match against Inter Milan.

Tottenham Hotspur

After two Premier league wins in a row in early October, 2-1 at home against Aston Villa and 2-1 away against Fulham, Tottenham have lost some steps in recent rounds. But the North London club is still in the top 5 of the Premier League. Last weekend, a few days after their exhausting crash in Milan, it was 1-1 at home against Everton and this Saturday they lost 0-2 to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

As a whole, a deserved home team won (although the second goal was controversial; Nani touched the ball with his hand, then Gomes threw the ball on the ground in the belief that there was a free kick – it was just not whistled and Nani could kick the ball in the net), but Spurs should have scored, as van der Vaart had an attempt on the pole, and Bale had a good race at the left edge and a kick that went just off target.

At the Champions League group stage (which the team qualified for via the 2-3-defeat at home and 4-0 win at Young Boys), Spurs started out with a 2-2 away draw against Werder Bremen, afterward it was 4-1 at home against Twente – and last a 3-4 loss in Milan.

Thus Tottenham is number 2 in the group with 4 points. Inter has 7, while Twente and Werder both have two. Werder Bremen is likely to be the worst competitor for second place, meeting Twente at home Tuesday night. Coach Redknapp expects victory to the Germans and says; it is important that his team gets something out of the Inter-fight. This can be interpreted in two ways – offensively or defensively – but I do not think it makes Tottenham play a defensively – after all it is a home game, and his team are inherently offensive.

Captain Ledley King (also out against Milan and Manchester) is not ready and Dawson and Woodgate are still missing as well. So still a somewhat weak central defense. It has experienced Gallas, but beyond that they are coming up short. Both Bassong and Kaboul (costing a goal against United) are uncertain cards.

Up to the battle, there have been doubts about offensive man van der Vaart and the defensive midfield man Huddlestone, but both are reported ready.

Inter Milan

The defending Champions League winners from Inter Milan leads Group A with 7 points after a 2-2 away draw against Twente, 4-0 at home against Werder and 4-3 at home against Tottenham. A victory at White Hart Lane will mean that the first place is virtually guaranteed, but coach Benitez will unlikely be disappointed with one point.

The many goals – at both ends – one does not see much at home in Serie A, where Inter is “only” in second place after Lazio, who has had a phantom start. In the last five rounds Inter has only 8 points and a goal score of 3-2. Inter have lost 0-1 away to Roma and had to settle for 1-1 at home against Sampdoria. This weekend, however, it was 1-0 away against Genoa (Inter should have won more – had more chances).

Their strong first keeper Julio Cesar was injured against Genoa and must be replaced, while Cambiasso is out with injury as well. He was also outside in the first Spurs match.

Betting tip for Tottenham vs Inter Milan

In my eyes the bookmakers have focused too much on Tottenham’s result in the first leg match against Inter and their 3 goals with 10 men against 11 away. They seem to forget what brought the English club in this situation with 0-1 after 2 minutes and a penalty after 8 and 0-4 at halftime.

Their defence and midfield seems to simply give up too much space to the opposing team. This was seen in Milan, and also later in Manchester. Of cause one needs to remember that Inter is missing Julio Cesar this time (and still Cambiasso), and that Tottenham are now at home at White Hart Lane and get Van der Vaart back from quarantine. But Tottenham is also missing their first goalkeeper Gomes and King, giving he is not cleared. Mid-defense is thus still significantly impaired.

All in all we find the value bet in this match to be on Inter Milan and recommend backing the Italians in tonight’s clash in London.
