Spain vs Portugal – betting tips, match preview and prediction

World Cup BettingSpain will play Portugal in the second 1/8-final on Tuesday at 19:30 BST in Cape Town. The European champions come back from a chocking start to win their group and are now facing their Iberian neighbors Portugal in their first knockout game at the World Cup.

Match Preview

Today marks the two year day of Spain winning the European Championship, but will the Spanish side finally break their World Cup complex. To do so they must take a first step tonight toward the trophy by beating Portugal in the 1/8-final.

The Spanish team has not been playing up to their expectations yet and is maybe still recovering from their defeat to Switzerland in the first round match. Nevertheless, they managed to win their last two group matches comfortably against Honduras and Chile, which was enough to take first place in the group. Their play have seen better days though and is far from their performance at the euro 2008. Especially star striker Fernando Torres has been a shadow of himself compared to his normal high standard, but he were injured shortly before the World Cup, which could explain his lack of goals so far.

Portugal on the other hand ended up in the group of death and has played two dull goalless matches against Ivory Coast and Brazil so far. However they did manage to massacre North Korea in between to take second place in the group. Their three clean sheets at the World Cup makes for a total of four games in a row now and in their last twelve games they have only conceded one goal. Against both Ivory Coast and Brazil they opted for a defensive formation and although scoring 7 goals against North Korea, their defence seems to be their biggest quality at the moment.

Team Update

The Spanish side will likely have to play without key midfielder Xabi Alonso after a sprained ankle, and he will be replaced with young Javier Martinez if necessary. In addition Raul Albiol has been ruled out for the match due to an ankle ligament in training.

Portugal will once again have the services of Deco for the match, but it is still questionable whether he will play the starting line-up after excellent performances from replacement Tiago. Danny most likely will miss the match for Portugal today with a bruised leg and will be replaced by either Almeida or Liedson should he not recover.

Spain vs Portugal betting tip

Our betting pick will be a draw at odds 3.20 at 888 Sports.

The two sides have had 32 previous encounters and only five times have Portugal managed to win against Spain’s 15 wins. Though strangely Portugal has lost just one fixture to Spain since 1958 and actually won their last encounter 1-0 at the euro 2004. But like most local derbies, the matches between Spain and Portugal are usually very close and a total of twelve times their games ended up with no winner. We believe this could be the case again tonight and have opted for the draw in our betting pick. A very likely result in light of the excellent Portuguese defensive games so far, which have proven hard to penetrate against both Ivory Coast and Brazil. And on the other side a Spanish attack that have not yet found its normal high level of play. Our match prediction will be another low scoring draw for Portugal and a penalty shootout in the end to separate the two Iberian neighbors.
