Netherlands vs Slovakia – betting tips, match preview and prediction

World Cup BettingThe Netherlands play Slovakia in the first 1/8-final on Monday at 15:00 BST in Durban. The Dutch won all their group stage matches to qualify on top of their group and is considered the overwhelming favorites today, but Slovakia already sent home the defending world champions from Italy and will try to do same against the Netherlands later this afternoon.

Match Preview

As expected the Netherlands won their group comfortably to progress to the knockout stage in the tournament, but the question is whether they can keep up their impressive form and qualify for the quarter-final at the World Cup. The Dutch recent history suggests they can not take progress for granted, as they never really reach their potential beyond the group stage. In their two most recent tournaments in 2006 and in 2008 (Euro), they won their group comfortably as well, but failed in the first round of knockout games. However, it is a truth with some modification, as they were finalists in both 1974 and 1978, which shows they do know what the knockout stage is all about. Their three wins so far makes for an unbeaten run of 22 games and although not impressing with world class play yet, they do look like strong favorites today.

Slovakia is making their World Cup debut as an independent country and must not be underestimated by the Dutch. Despite conceding a late goal to draw against New Zealand and losing their second match against Paraguay, they managed to qualify by sending home the defending champions from Italy in a highly entertaining match. The victory was well deserved and especially young captain Marek Hamsik played a stunning game in the 3-2 win against Italy. They are now looking to make another upset against the Netherlands, but coach Vladimir Weiss’s side will have a tough assignment breaking down the confident Dutch side.

Team Updates

The Dutch are still waiting for their star player Arjen Robben to be fully fit from his injury and he will likely be benched from the start again today. Besides Robben they have a fit squad to choose from, which must be comforting news for the Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk before the match against Slovakia.

Vladimir Weiss is in a similar situation, although Zdene Strba is banned for the match. He will most likely be replaced with Kamil Kopunek. In addition to him they will probably not make any changes, which seem logical after their great 3-2 win against the Italians.

Holland vs Slovakia betting tip

The match betting pick will be Holland to win at odds 1.44 at 888 Sports.

The Slovaks surprised against Italy and deservedly won the match. They would have to make a similar performance to progress today, and it is questionable whether they can play two games in a row at that level. Of cause confidence should not be underestimated, but nevertheless we have chosen the Dutch to win. Considering their early exits from the knockout stage in recent years, the Dutch are hungry for success. At the same time they have the same level of confidence as the Slovaks coming from 22 matches without defeat. The Dutch side is stronger player for player as well and we find it hard to believe the Slovaks will surprise another time. The match prediction will be a 2-1 or 3-1 victory for the Netherlands.

Players could consider the handicap win for Netherlands as well, if they are looking for more value. It can currently be played at odds 2.37 at 888 Sports. We recommend this bet to all players without an 888 Sports account, as they can receive a £20 money back guarantee on their first bet and would be guaranteed not to lose.

At same time players could combine the bet with one of our many Sports Betting Bonuses, which would minimize the risk as well.
