Honduras vs Chile – betting tips and match preview

World Cup BettingHonduras take on Chile in an all American first match to kick off group H. Most people are expecting a very exciting match today at Nelspruit, when the second place finishers from the strong South American qualifying group will play unheeded Honduras at 12:30 BST.

Match Preview

The 16th of June is ironically enough the date of Chile’s last win at the World Cup, unfortunately it was back in 1962. Back then they reached the semi-final playing in their home country, but had to settle for third place, which is their best result to date. More than any country they must be hungry for victory after 13 matches at the World Cup without winning since. Although the statistics are unimpressive, they are probably very optimistic and confident this time. Finishing second in their qualifying group and qualifying for the first time since 1998, must leave the squad and country ecstatic before kick off today. In their warm-up games they have shown great shape as well and have won the last three matches comfortably playing fantastic attacking and inspiring football.

On the other hand Honduras qualified for the World Cup in the last minute after USA scored a late goal against Costa Rica to deny them access. This is only their second World Cup appearance and nobody is really expecting much from the team, which is most likely happy just being in South Africa. They have not won any of their preparation games and will have to rely on heart and hard work to stand a chance today. Nevertheless, they did had the same expectations back in their first participation in 1982, where they did get one point against both Spain and Northern Ireland. If they can show the same spirit today, they might be able to surprise the strong team from Chile.

Team Updates

Honduran target man David Suazo is currently struggling to become fit for the match, who was not expected back so early and he will likely be on the bench today. In addition midfielder Julio Cesar de Leon is doubtful after getting injured in their preparation, while Wilson Palacios is going to play after has minor injury.

Humberto Suazo from Chile is doubtful, but will hopefully be ready to kick off. At the same time Chile will have Gonzalo Jara back in defence, while Rodrigo Millar is still struggling with his injury.

Honduras vs Chile betting tip

We recommend betting on an outright win for Chile at odds 1.61 at 888 sports.

Chile actually lost their last encounter with Honduras 2-0 in January 2009 in a friendly match, but we are likely to see a very different match today. The fact that it is a competitive match will change play and Chile’s current shape suggests they more are than ready. Finishing one point after Brazil in qualification shows strength and stability, which will be important in an opening game at the World Cup. At the same time their squad is simply better than the Honduran and we expect a 2-0 or 3-0 victory for Chile.
