Germany vs England – betting tips, match preview and prediction

World Cup BettingWe can expect a great football match when England takes on Germany today at 15:00 BST in the 1/8-finals of the World Cup in Bloemfontein. England vs Germany has always been a great fixture in the world of football and the emotions will be huge again today for fans on both sides.

Match Preview

Most football fans do not even remember or for that matter experience the World Cup in 1966, but for the English supporters it is their finest moment in World Cup history. Since then they have not won the World or beaten the German side in the tournament. A quick trip through memory lane shows England lost in 1970; got a draw in 1982 and lost on penalty shootout in 1990. However the last time they faced Germany in a competitive match, England played a stunning match and won 5-1 in Germany in the 2002 World Cup qualifier.

At present both sides endured some problems at the group stage and only managed to qualify for the knockout round in their last group match. Germany had the best possible start winning 4-0 against Australia, but then lost 1-0 to Serbia after a somewhat stupid red card to Miroslav Klose in first half. Nevertheless they secured the necessary win against Ghana in the final group game to qualify on top of group D. On the other hand England started off drawing against USA and Algeria, but eventually qualified by a 1-0 win against Slovenia in their final group match ending up in second place in their group.

However, all will likely be forgotten when the teams enter the pitch today. In a fixture filled with history and intensity, previous play and results does not matter much, and it will be the form of the day deciding the eventual winner.

Team Updates

English coach Fabio Capello is facing a difficult decision today at the center back. So far three players have been used and a decision must be made between Matthew Upson, Ledley King and Jamie Carragher. All are available for the match today as King has overcome his groin injury and Carragher has served his ban. The only other question was Wayne Rooney, but he is available after a light ankle knock obtained against Slovenia.

Luckily for the Germans Miroslav Klose is available again after a one match suspension, as his replacement for the Ghana match, Cacau, sustained a muscle injury. The Germans are still concerned over Bastian Schweinsteiger after a hamstring strain injury picked op against the Ghanaians. Furthermore Jerome Boateng is questionable, but could be replaced by either young Holger Badstuber or more experienced Marcell Jansen.

Germany vs England betting tip

Our betting pick will be a draw at odds 3.10 at 888 Sports.

As always when Germany and England plays, we are expecting a great fixture with a lot of intensity and fight. At the World Cup both sides have won one each until now, while the two last matches ended up with draw in 1982 and 1990. Again today we expect a very close match between the two sides and it is difficult to proclaim a favorite. The sides are quite evenly matched and a winner could easily be decided by who has the marginal on their side in key situations. We have opted to bet on a draw in the match and consider it a quite possible outcome. It is expected a lot of play will take place in midfield and either side will not be given away many chances. The match prediction will be either 0-0 or 1-1 and a penalty shootout seems to be a very possible outcome.
