Champions League: Chelsea FC v Inter Milan

champions league - Chelsea v InterChelsea will take on Inter at Stanford Bridge in the second leg deciding which of the two teams that will precede to the quarter finals in this years Champions League. Two weeks ago Inter won the first leg in the 1/8-finals with 2-1 and Chelsea is forced to win this match, if they want to keep the dream of their first Champions League trophy alive.

Optimism from Chelsea

Despite a 2-1 defeat Chelsea can be quite optimistic before tonight’s match after an equal first leg, where both teams could have scored more goals and both teams could have won. The main factor for Chelsea in the first game was to score the very important away goal, which they managed to do. This will push Inter forward in today’s match, if Chelsea scores the first goal. We can expect Chelsea to attach and put pressure on Inter from the beginning of the match, where they will be pushed forward by the home crowd that expect to see Chelsea dominate this game. Chelsea had a somewhat easy way to the 1/8-finals playing Porto, Atletico Madrid and APOEL at the group stage and won the group quite comfortable with four wins and two draws. At home in Premier League, they are still in for the championship and come with a fresh 4-1 victory over West Ham only loosing 1 out of 26 games at home this season. Chelsea is missing their first two goalkeepers in Petr Cech and Hilario and furthermore Ashley Cole, Jose Bosingwa and Michael Essien are out. Especially the loss of the two goalkeepers might cause some problems in the back, although substitute Ross Turnbull is not a bad keeper.

On the other hand Inter’s way through the group stage was quite unstable drawing in the first three matches against Barcelona, Rubin Kazan and Dynamo Kiev. In the end they managed to go through by beating Dynamo Kiev away, loosing to Barcelona and last but least winning against Rubin Kazan at home. at home in League they still lead the table, but only by one point after winning only one game in six matches. This said, they have an okay result with them from the first match and will probably start out quite defensive protecting their 2-1 lead. The main question will be whether they can hold Chelsea from scoring and if not, whether they can manage to score themselves. Inter is only missing Christian Chivu, while Mario Balotelli and Davide Santon are dubious before the match.
