Chelsea started out with full speed in the Premiership, but although impressive victories, they have been exclusively against lower ranked teams. This said they are looking strong. Especially Michael Essien’s return to full form is remarkable, while Didier Drogba has also developed his game to include a creator and master of attack role, played to UG. The Ivorian have also scored 12 goals against Arsenal in the past 12 games, and he is a good bet for a goal scorer in the match, especially taking into consideration that he sat out against Marseille because of quarantine.

Additionally, the Blues have avoided the injuries this year (apart from a brief injury to Frank Lampard), and it has provided continuity and stability. Carlos Ancelotti has proved to be the right man for the job and with him at the helm, Chelsea won, 2-0 and 3-0 against Wenger and co respectively the last two times.

Squad News

Frank Lampard (midfielder – injured) is still out. Salomon Kalou (striker – reserve) and Yossi Benayoun (midfielder – Reserve) are also on the injury bench, while Didier Drogba returns to the team after his suspension in the midweek Champions League clash against Marseille.

The Gunners’ season has been symptomatic of their campaigns in the Premier League the last several seasons. At times, they play brilliant football and run over opponents (including Blackpool, Braga and Bolton), but other times they lose out of the blue (most recently against West Bromwich at Emirates Stadium, where it looked too easy for The Baggies). The stability possessed by Chelsea for example, Wenger must try to find in his team, if they are to have any chance of winning the premier League this year.

That being said, the team has some days where everything goes up in a higher unity, and if it happens on Sunday, Chelsea can certainly get a hard time. Their biggest problem is to handle Chelsea’s physical pressure. Players like Nasri, Wilshire, Rosicky, Denilson and Arshavin live on their technique and speed, but if they are not given the space and time, their contribution are relatively modest. Therefore it is a huge plus for the squad that Abou Diaby is ready again, as he and Alex Song can fight battles in midfield.

Squad News

Unfortunately for Arsenal, the star of them all, Cesc Fabregas (midfielder – fixed) are not ready and it obviously gives Chelsea an added advantage. Manuel Almunia (Goalkeeper – fixed) is not clear either, but it is not necessarily bad for the Gunners, as Lukasz Fabianski (Goalkeeper – Reserve) did excellent against Partizan in midweek. At Arsenal’s long injury list is also: Nicklas Bendtner (striker – starter / reserve), Kieran Gibbs (back – reserve), Theo Walcott (wing – starter), Aaron Ramsey (Midfield – reserve), Robin van Persie (striker – starter) and Thomas Vermaelen (Defence – starter).

Betting Tip

Chelsea has had an unusually good grip on Arsenal in the last few seasons, and last year the Gunners were defeated 2-0 and 3-0 respectively. In these two games there was never any doubt about the outcome, and again on Sunday – where Arsenal are without Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas – We predict that Wenger’s squad gets a very long afternoon at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea rarely loses at Stamford Bridge and they have a big physical advantage in their fight against their London rivals. All lines are stronger than Arsenal’s and especially without Robin van Persie; it is difficult to see how they can break through the Blues’ defense. In addition the chronically injured Dutchman was funnily enough the double goal score last time his team won against Chelsea in November 2008.

Arsenal has had problems with continuity again this year, which was shown against West Bromwich this weekend, where they disappointed and lost 2-3 at Emirates Stadium. It does obviously not make it easier for Wenger, that he has many injuries to key players for the young guns – which replace the damaged master players – and tend to fluctuate very much in the level, and costs points.
