Chelsea captain John Terry might have spoken too soon, when he referred to the Liverpool game as their worst performance ever. As if by a weird twist of fate, Sunderland shocked the defending champions with not one or two goals, but a historic three goals to cap off what can be referred as poetic justice for Sunderland after a history of thrashings by the men in blue.

Chelsea’s defensive problems seem to have gone from bad to worse with an injury wave hitting them hard. Terry is out on injury and so is Alex, who is said to be suffering from an ankle injury and is expected to be out for weeks.

The stunned champions will be looking for a win to maintain their lead in table. If anything the lesson they should learn from the Sunderland encounter, is that no team is too small to sting. A win today will not only put them a step closer to winning the championship, but will also be a confidence booster for the players and fans, as well as a stern warning to other title aspirants.

Birmingham on the other hand was held to a goalless draw by Manchester City, or rather, City was held to a goalless draw by Birmingham – whatever, depends on your opinion. Point is, they need goals and they need them now!

Ok, granted, Chelsea is normally not the team to go to for the goals against; but their defensive line has likely never been worse, which does give cause for optimism. This might be Birmingham’s chance to strike champions, who they have not won against home since 1980.

The last game Birmingham played, they went with the 4-4-2 formation and I doubt that the manager will make any changes. Chelsea on the other hand is likely to go with a 4-3-3 to provide the necessary attacking pressure that leads to goals. In any case Chelsea will try to be controlling and keep Birmingham off the ball, which could prove necessary with their defensive line in mind.

Betting Tips for Birmingham vs Chelsea

The odds are really stacked against Birmingham in today’s encounter. A total of 80 games against Chelsea have produced 19 wins and 37 defeats with their last home win dating back to 1980. In addition they have only won one of their last 11 matches in the Premier League, which does speak for itself.

This said, they have drawn against the top four in their previous 7 home encounters and seem to up their game versus the big four.

The question might be, what the effects of Chelsea’s shocking home defeat will be today. They certainly have something to prove and could be utilizing this fact for a positive outcome in today’s match.

We believe Chelsea will up their game and our betting tip is Chelsea to win.
