Barcelona vs Mallorca – Primera Division – Match Preview and Betting Tips

Barcelona will be playing Mallorca this Sunday in the Primera Division at 18:00 GMT at Camp Nou. While Barcelona disappointed in the Champions League with 1-1 against Robin Kazan, the underdogs from Mallorca comes with a fresh win against Sporting Gijon in the last round.

Two old teammates collide as well on the coach front, where both Pep Guardiola and Michael Laudrup have a history in Barcelona. They were both a part of the contemporary ‘Dream Team’ in the 1990s, which dominated the international football scene. Laudrup was then the larger of the two, but Sunday night the roles are reversed, when Laudrup’s underdogs Mallorca, guests Guardiola’s Barcelona.

FC Barcelona

Barcelona opened the season by winning the Super Cup against Sevilla convincingly. Since then, the convincing game has faded a bit and it all culminated, when Barcelona lost to newcomers Hercules. Last weekend they won 3-1 away against Athletic Bilbao, which was a good result, but David Villa was expelled and is therefore out with quarantine against Mallorca. Last Wednesday they played 1-1 against Rubin Kazan in the Champions League, in a match which the Catalans should have had more of.

The key to success for Barcelona will be to score on their chances, and to produce a lot of them. It becomes harder for the team now that Xavi is out, but the rest of the team possesses qualities enough to open any defense in the league. Therefore Barcelona will probably not have big problems creating chances; the problem will be to score on them. It has lagged a bit lately to score and the team’s strikers are not sharp enough.

Xavi has been reported out of the match due to injury. David Villa is quarantined and serving against Mallorca, while Adriano is also still out. The good news is that Eric Abidal is back after an absence due to personal reasons. He allegedly visited his grandfather’s deathbed at home.

Mallorca

The holiday island’s local pride, Mallorca CF ended up last season on a very impressive 6th place. The club has lost many of the profiles, which helped them secure the nice finishing position. Mario Suarez is sold to Atletico Madrid and Aritz Aduriz to Valencia, while Michael Laudrup has also replaced the former head coach. Transferred in is Guzman on a free transfer from Feyenoord, while Fernando Cavenaghi has come on a rental agreement from Bordeaux.

The season started out well with a tie against none other than Real Madrid. Subsequently, it has been for two defeats away from home and two victories at home. It becomes vital for Mallorca to destroy Barcelona’s fluid passing game today, which constantly helps to create chances for the home team. Similarly, Mallorca’s defensive must stand compact and make sure that Pedro and Bojan do not get too much space to run down behind the defenders.

Ayoze and Nunes is definitely out for Mallorca. Victor Casadesus and Enrique Corrales are both very doubtful and not expected to be found in the combat squad.

Betting Tip

Barcelona is missing two of the club’s big guns in the shape of Xavi Hernandez and David Villa, who respectively are harmed and quarantined.

Mallorca will certainly come defensively to the match, where the key to success will be the balance in the back and not standing too low. They will defend with all means, which they actually do good, as shown against Real Madrid in their first match this season.

FC Barcelona was in cold Russia in midweek, where the team played 1-1 against Rubin Kazan and the result really shows Barcelona’s current form. They find it hard to score on their chances and play a bit inane, while Mallorca on the other hand comes with a victory over Sporting Gijon in baggage.

Our prediction will be a low scoring affair, in which Barcelona will dominate. A central question will be, whether Mallorca can hold Barcelona from scoring early in the game. If they can, a solid bet could be a draw, but Mallorca’s away form makes it tough to believe and the match prediction will be 1-0 or 2-0 for Barcelona.
