AS Roma vs. Shakhtar – Match Preview – Betting Tips – Match Odds

Champions League - AS Roma vs. ShakhtarThe 1/8 finals didn’t start according to the plan for AC Milan with a match lost against a team, they were glad to be meeting at this stage of the competition. AS Roma was equally delighted with the result of the draw in Nyon, but they may well share a similar fate. With Borriello missing this match and goalkeeper Lobont completely out of form they will have quite a few problems to tackle. For the Ukrainian side the lack of appropriate training is the only concern, since they’ve been on vacation for more than two months.

Match Preview

In Serie A, Roma’s ambitions of winning the Scudetto have vanished following a string of defeats and the only way to save a mediocre season is to move further in the Champions League. Coach Ranieri is going to have a tough mission with the goalkeepers, since Sergio in injured, Lobont is useless and Doni played just four times this season. He has no choice but to trust the 31 years old Brazilian and hope that Doni will be supported by the defensive players.

This looks more like wishful thinking, given the seven goals conceded in just two games, but a lot of resources must be spent to prevent conceding a goal. Shakhtar is going to play the second leg at home, and that’s why Lucescu is preparing this confrontation as a 180 minutes battle, rather than a 90 minutes clash. In addition the Brazilian division assembled by Lucescu should prove more than a match for Roma’s defense, although the most intense battle will be fought in the midfield.

The visitors have some problems of their own regarding their fitness, with Kucher and Fernandinho sidelined, but the biggest concern is the uncertainty about the way the entire team will perform, following such a long break. Their only visit here ended with a humiliating 4-0 defeat, but now with Borriello out, the Italians are going to turn to Totti and Vucinici. It is a gamble, given Francesco’s lack of form, but with Adriano being too fat and slow to compete, the choices are limited.

Betting Tip

Shakhtar won the group and the only defeat came in London, a 1-5 meltdown against Arsenal. The average of goals scored and conceded in away fixtures was 4, exactly the same Roma had on its own pitch. With Borriello absent and the Ukrainians accommodating with this level of competition, the odds offered by the bookies are over evens and the 2,5 line can easily be beaten.

Our betting tip – Over 2.5 goals.
