Argentina vs Mexico – betting tips, match preview and prediction

World Cup BettingArgentina will play Mexico in second 1/8-final on Sunday at 19:30 BST in Johannesburg at Soccer City stadium. The 2010 World Cup have been dominated so far by the Latin American teams, but tonight either Argentina or Mexico will have to leave the tournament when they clash in a classic south vs central American fight for the final 8 at the World Cup.

Match Preview

All five nations from the South American World Cup qualifier managed to secure a spot between the final 16, while two out of three Central American nations achieved the same. Tonight the two most promising teams from either part will clash for a place between the final 8.

The Mexicans have yet to show their full potential at the World Cup, although winning against 2006 runner up from France at the group stage. Nevertheless, they have now made it to the final 16 for the fifth time in a row, but unfortunately the 1/8-final have also been their last stop in their previous four attempts. It does not look easy the Mexicans this time either, as they are up against the team, who ironically was their last stop in the 1/8-finals in 2006.

On the other hand Argentina and Diego Maradona must have happy memories regarding Mexico. In 1986 Maradona lifted the World Cup trophy himself in Mexico and in general the Argentineans has had good grip on Mexico. With 25 games played, they have only lost four times and never at the World Cup, which must be a comforting stat for Argentinean side. In addition Argentina has not disappointed at the World Cup so far and Mexico will have a hard time tonight against the free-flowing Argentinean football. Furthermore Argentina has scored must of their goals from set-pieces, which will be yet another weapon for Mexico to attend to.

Team Updates

Argentina coach Maradona opted to save some of his key players against Greece, but we are expecting to Carlos Tevez, Gonzalo Higuain and Javier Mascherano back on the pitch tonight. In addition Jonas Gutierrez is back from suspension and will likely start. They only have one questionable player in Walter Samuel, which mean Nicolas Burdisso could start should he not recover.

We expect Mexico to start the same eleven as against Uruguay, although Efrain Juarez could return after his one match suspension. It is unknown whether Carlos Vela will fully recover and he will like start on the bench in either way.

Argentina vs Mexico betting tip

Our betting pick is Argentina as outright winner at odds 1.57 at 888 Sports.

The two sides performed very different at the group stage of the tournament. Mexico was really struggling to get their normal game going and actually got some needed help from a France side in solution. Argentina on the other hand has been showing their great abilities and why they are among the favorites to win the tournament. A quick comparison between the two squads shows major differences as well, and Argentina is rightfully the overwhelming bookie favorite. The only questionable thing about Argentina might be their defensive line, which has made some big errors so far. However their offensive qualities should be more than enough against Mexico, who has not reached the normal standard of play yet at the World Cup. Our match prediction will be 2-1 or 3-1 to Argentina, sending them on their way to the quarter-final again, as in 2006 against Mexico.
