Users trying to visit www.betfair.com will find that the site is unavailable at present(UPDATE 22:24 GMT, September 4- access restored) . Just a few minutes ago there was a message from a hacker group named Turkguvenligi on the main site. All services are down including the Betfair poker client, casino and Betfair sports betting.
Other websites down
The attack also seems to include Nationalgeographic.com, Acer.com, Ups.com Vodafone.com and Telegraph.co.uk. All of these sites are registered through Ascio, why it is a fair chance it was them who was hacked and not Betfair itself.
A support nightmare
Still this is major for the world’s biggest sports exchange. Now they have to ensure the whole client base about their security. Furthermore this will have a lot of impact since it is normal procedure to cancel bets when it is impossible to trade on the sports exchange. Even this procedure is fair, then many punters with a winning bet will find it hard to comprehend that their winnings will be nullified due to a security breach they had no impact on whatsoever.
A true nightmare for Betfair customer service is underway and the betting exchange will without doubt be hurt when bettors find out they did not score any winnings when bets are void. Tennis match-results likeYoung- Chela,DelPotro- Nalbandian and Roddick-Benneteau might all be impacted. Punters who had backed the winning team will not understand why bets do not stand and will blame Betfair their “non winnings”- an almost impossible situation have arisen for the sports exchange who will find themselves in need to reassure their player base somehow.
Luckily for Betfair all the big European soccer leagues are not playing this Sunday and the number of bettors online when the downtime happened significant lower than on a normal Sunday evening.
Punters who had backed the winning team will not understand why bets do not stand and will blame Betfair their “non winnings”. An almost impossible situation has arisen for the sports exchange who will find themselves in need to reassure their player base somehow. Thus it is worthwhile looking at Betfair the coming days to see if or what they will do to reestablish the credibility.
Betfair Customer Commitment
It is our opinion at this point in time, that Betfair itself are not to be blamed for the hacked site and that the rule of cancelling bets is fair. Furthermore we do not believe that any user data has been compromised and that all accounts are safe. We will continuously support Betfair since we believe they are one of the most transparent gaming companies as of today and that their implementation of Betfair Customer Commitment is something unique in the gaming industry.
The commitment from Betfair states
- Customer Protection – We’ll continue to strive for industry leading levels of protection to ensure safety for customers and their data.
- Integrity – We’ll always act with integrity to build trusted relationships with our customers, regulators, employees and local communities.
- Customer Service – We’ll provide helpful and professional service when you need it.
- Communication – We’re committed to clear and relevant communication with our customers.
- Product and Technology – We’ll focus on the quality and reliability of our products and services. “
At least we can expect Betfair to comment on the situation, since this is what they promised Customers in the above commitment.
